We sense chemicals in our environment through chemosensation, the process of converting chemical stimuli into nerve impulses our brains process and we interpret as perception. This ability to sense involves three distinct physiological pathways: olfaction, gustation and chemesthesis, or the chemical activation of the somatosensory system.
