Presentor: Harold H. Schmitz, PhD, Sheryl A. Lazarus and John F. Hammerstone Mars, Inc

Chocolate has recently been in the news, not only for its unique and wellknown sensory properties, but also for its potential health benefits. As fantastic and surreal as this may sound, a close examination of the scientific evidence does indeed suggest that some chocolates may have the potential to contribute health benefits when consumed in moderation. However, it is still premature to say that this promising evidence is conclusive, and care must be taken to properly interpret and represent this very exciting data. Accordingly, this article will seek to provide a brief but clear assessment of the validity of the hypothesis that chocolate can confer cardiovascular health benefits, as well as what further studies need to be done to prove this effect conclusively.
