Cocoa is commercially cultivated over a widespread geographic area, including parts of Latin America, Africa and Southeast Asia. Last year, a record 3 million tons was produced. This year’s crop, however, is expected to decline slightly while consumption continues to increase by 2.5–3.5 percent. Although supplies have been abundant over the last few years, forecasters are predicting a 100,000–150,000 ton deficit in stocks in 2000/01. Several important long-term concerns and trends could impact the future supply of cocoa
