Over the past century chewing gum has been used as a delivery system for various medicaments. There are patents from the early 1900s where chewing gum was used to deliver coffee extract and caffeine. Later on in the mid-1900s, a nicotinebased chewing gum was developed at the request of the Swedish Navy to help control the cravings of its submarine crews. This opened the door to a whole new dimension in drug delivery
