Clean in place (cip) is when process piping and vessels can be cleaned automatically without disconnecting pieces of the process machinery for manual cleaning. There are five key components: • Process system designed to be cleaned • Cip unit • Spray devices to clean vessels and cookers • Chemical dosing system • Cip control system Systems utilizing cip have been used in the dairy industry for the past 50 years and in the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries since the late 1960s. Today it is not unusual for many nondairy food companies with dry and semi-dry or viscous products to use automated cip systems.
