Description

Presenter: Margaret K. Meyer, ACDI/VOCA

Sustainable cocoa production is important at the level of global trade and at the level of village livelihoods. The major consumers of cocoa are located in the United States and Western Europe, while producers are primarily smallholder farmers located in developing countries in Latin America, West Africa and Southeast Asia. The U.S. and European chocolate manufacturers need to be able to maintain a sufficient and high-quality supply of cocoa beans to meet the demands of their consumers, and need to ensure the long-term sustainability of the raw products needed to produce chocolate. For developing countries, the need to maintain sustainable cocoa production is even more vital — hundreds of thousands of livelihoods depend on it.
