Significant new regulations and policies are on the horizon in 2004. The food industry awaits final food security rules on recordkeeping as well as legislation and regulation on labeling of trans fats and allergens. Low-carbohydrate products may also be permitted to make nutrient content claims in the near future as FDA considers its role in addressing health and obesity in the United States.As the demand for new products increases in the United States, opportunity to enhance U.S. exports and gain access to critical raw materials is possible through several free trade agreements to be negotiated this year.
