Let me start by posing a question. Was the Hershey bar a watershed product? Milton Hershey did not invent the chocolate bar. That honor goes to Peters in Switzerland about 1875. He did not even invent the milk chocolate bar; that already had been done by a number of people.Although Hershey did innovate with the taste of his product, particularly his almost 10-year effort to condense milk without burning it and produce the flavor he preferred, the genius of Hershey lay in the manufacturing process he put together that enabled him to sell a 40 g milk chocolate bar for a nickel. He created a new category of confectionery, “a goodtasting milk chocolate bar that everyone could afford.”
