Much has changed in Washington, DC, since the election of President Barack Obama. We have witnessed a change of administration and the corresponding change in philosophical approach to government. We have also witnessed the biggest food recall in U.S. history, stemming from improperly handled peanuts, which resulted in nine deaths and many hundreds of individuals sickened. Food safety is now the focus and priority of the food industry — it is also a priority for government and the consumer. This article will review the new regulatory and political environment for food safety as well as summarize recent events of food-borne illness and their specific impact on the confectionery industry. Resources for improving food safety and pathogen control will be discussed.
