This article will provide an overview of the major health- and nutrition-related policy initiatives that may impact the confectionery industry immediately and into the foreseeable future. Initiatives to reduce obesity in the United States include changing the school food environment, limiting advertising of certain foods to kids, new labeling tools for consumers and dietary guidance geared toward an overweight American population. An overweight U.S. population is also an excuse for some states to pursue taxes on foods like candy, fast food and soft drinks — even though the real motivation behind these taxes is generally a severe budget deficit. I will also provide an update on food-safety reform, choking prevention and developments for artificial colors in the United States and Europe.
