Products touted for being made with hemp and cannabidiol, commonly referred to as cbd, are proliferating. Many of these are food products. Traditionally, because these ingredients came from the cannabis plant they were illegal.As of 2017, estimates of retail sales of all products containing hemp and cbd were $820 million, and sales are projected to grow to $1 billion in 2020. What is behind the recent growth in these products? What products are “legal” and which are not? Are cannabis regulations really going up in smoke? This article provides an update on the state of the legal and regulatory landscape of cannabis in food.As a caveat, the author is not providing legal advice.This is a general update, and any legal advice must take into account individual factors.
