Nuts, including peanuts and tree nuts, are a low-moisture food known to be susceptible to Salmonella contamination. Salmonella contamination of food has been a significant problem for the food industry, resulting in more than 40,000 cases of salmonellosis infection reported each year in the United States. Food manufacturers that produce nut-containing products can maintain their reputation for quality and food safety by focusing their efforts on Salmonella risk. These efforts could lead to reduced incidences of illness and prevention of costly product recalls
