Louis Koko, PhD, CNRA Div, Cocoa Program, Côte d’Ivoire. Presented at the 2015 conference
Côte d’Ivoire is the world leader in cocoa production with 40 percent of world supply (1.7 million tons of cocoa beans per year). This performance is the result of several decades of extensive cocoa growing, but the system of cocoa growing has contributed to the degradation of more than 80 percent of fertile farmland, which was originally claimed from forest. Unable to reproduce this system, those involved with cocoa are faced with risks for sustainable cocoa production.
