Protein is popping up in all corners of the grocery store as consumers and shoppers become more aware of the important role that protein plays in the diet. The media and fad diets focused on protein are showing consumers that we don’t have to go hungry in order to maintain a healthy diet. According to the 2014 NPD Groupreport Protein Perceptions and Needs, 78 percent of consumers say that protein is part of a healthy diet yet only 29 percent of grocery shoppers are aware of the recommended amount. Many consumers are also concerned with the calories and fat that are often found in high-protein processed foods, or they feel that they are too expensive for everyday consumption. Food manufacturers continue to look for new venues to get protein onto the market shelves and into the hands of consumers
